Church cafeteria ceiling starting to come together. Clear finish on red oak 1x8’s.
And the newly installed rose window framing in the church itself . It’s somehow even more shockingly huge in place. 10’-0” diameter stained glass window will go there in a couple months.
Everything is shaping up for it to be a pretty neat space. Ceiling in the church will be the same clear finished red oak, but like 8-10 times more of it.

Did they use magic to seal that vapor barrier or does code stipulate to not give any effs?
Woodwork looks great though.

Industrial grade double sided magic.

If the good lord approves, who am I to argue?
I’ve been involved in building a handful of churches over the years, spanning various denominations. Hopefully I’m covered when I finally kick it old school, regardless of who was right.

This one has gone together pretty nicely... except the bleeding brick... that’s been a bit of an issue.

Sometimes I think every church built in the last 30 years or so is done in that same oak.

I’m used to seeing maple, white oak, or dark stained red oak. People seem afraid to use woods with grain in clear type finishes.

I may be able to help.
How’s your latin?

Not good enough to run an exorcism... lol.

The church I grew up in is renovating right now, so far, they've painted over all the wood and replaced the custom made hanging light fixtures designed for the building with recessed can lights.

My church has a stone and giant timber style sanctuary, but for modern architecture that’s all extremely elegant.

This area is going to be 2x2 acoustical tile.
I’m also disappointed you didn’t center the diffusers to enhance the paradolia, lol.

Yikes

There’s going to be a lot of brick in the sanctuary. Basically everything up to 14 ’-0” will be brick and the entire ceiling will be red oak. The large wall behind the altar will be arriscraft cast stone.

show em my chop, they’ll agree to make it wood paneling instead of lame acoustic tiles :D

Why is there a 4 foot thick bump-out wall where the stained glass window will be placed? Will the window be flush with the inside wall or the exterior wall? Seems odd to have that thickness obscuring a focal piece of art glass.

That wall is actually a return air plenum for the church. The stained glass will sit on the interior face, while the aluminum glazing will sit on the exterior.

Huh. I see this finish in almost every Catholic church I go to anymore.

That doesn’t sound appealing. What color paint?

Beig e and w hite with faux fieldstone, used to be white with hunter green sections around the statuary.

A generation from now, there will be renovation to bring back the original look. These things run in cycles.

Quite possibly. I think the fake cast concrete stone look has already about peaked in popularity. Reminds me of a ‘90s Eastern Mountain Sports mall store.

My old church in Ann Arbor was a beautiful old building. Sometime in the 60s or 7 0s they put this mural along the back wall. When they got the $2M to renovate in 2003 or so, they ripped it out to find gorgeous stained glass windows that had been covered over, amongst other monstrosities. Basically, someone had clothed the church in a leisure suit and it was given a proper wardrobe.

Well, this one was built in the 1980s and was not really an architectural masterpiece when new, although it did have a lot of Prairie School influence, which the new work is not respecting. And a lot of the stuff taken out was at least better quality than what’s gone in to replace it.
